Jungle Homestays

The Tambopata River has been for a while a well known destination in southeastern Peru where a number of lodges offer jungle tours. Their neighbours along this river have had the chance to profit from the growing ecotourism industry by working at the lodges as staff, boat drivers or guides or as suppliers for certain products. It has not been until recently that some of these neighbours decided to become entrepreneurs of their own tourism business. They offer camping sites, while an increasing number of them offers rustic lodging at their homestays.

These stays are located along the Tambopata River, in the Buffer Zone of the Tambopata National Reserve. Well preserved portions of rainforest, where large trees are still to be found, can be visited on the jungle walks. These forests also harbour both mammal as well as parrot claylicks. As agriculture is still the main activity for most of the hosts, they provide an insight on the variety of crops grown in the Amazon. Other activities offered on the programs are piranha fishing, caiman searching, and listening to the local myths and stories. Participating at an Ayahuasca Ceremony is an option offered by some of the homestays.
